Twitter “Discovery Engine”

twitterI was reading a post by Robin Wauters on Tech Crunch (http://www.techcrunch.com) called “Twitter Confirms and Details New Discovery Engine”. The article was talking about Twitter’s soon to be newest feature called “Twitter Discovery”, a new search engine integrated within Twitter giving users the option to search for topics within their network and save results. The results users save while using this feature will be stored on their home page. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone confirmed this feature on the site called “The Discovery Engine Is Coming” .

What this does mean for Twitter users?

Not only will you be able to stay current with your friends through their tweets, now you’ll be able to stay current with the rest of the world using mainstream media keywords like events, news, White House, etc.

In addition to using this new feature, Twitter will be displaying popular topics below the search box on users home page. This is very similar to Yahoo’s “Today’s Top Searches” listing the top ten results.

This is a great feature for Twitter to centralize users on their site and to update/connect people with current events, news, and other media stories being searched. Whether you search about politics or entertainment, the “Discovery Engine” ties together search engines with social networks creating the next step in Social Media. With this new feature, Twitter can now be compared to Facebook and Yahoo (combining two types of online social media) but separated from either site, creating a new social media platform.
