The Cause and Effect of Social Media

If you aren’t thinking… no, if you don’t know that social media is changing the world, well, you probably aren’t reading this anyway. But, this past week I was sent a video by a few different people (you probably got the same one) that is a perfect example of how social media is really changing how everyone, especially some very larger brands, needs to think about how they conduct themselves.

It shouldn’t take a million video views of something so directly negative for a brand to do the right thing, but social media is still finding its mainstream footing - with brands, not consumers.

The real point for everyone is that once you step out of your home, life is no longer private (at a job for Mega Corp or just out being you). There is no place to hide. Every action has the potential for a reaction, and it isn’t always equal and opposite.

Instead, reactions to your actions, your words, you mannerisms, your every move is unpredictable, sporadic and many times dramatic compared to the original action. Yes, this will have many things that we will see as negative results, but think of the positives… the next time Time Warner Cable calls to offer me a “special” offer to upgrade my internet subscription (the only provider I am able to get internet through in my area without a satellite dish even though others in neighboring areas are of far better quality and price) to be a package that includes phone (it is the year 2009, I have a cell phone and no land line and have no intention of getting a land line, ever) and cable TV (I haven’t owned a TV for years, I get my fix on the internet) I can do something about it! (note: this is not the first time I have written about this wonderful, reoccurring experience on this blog)

People, individuals, users! Share your voices. Be fair to each other and lets work together to re-establish community. I always believed that the strongest communities were those that were willing to politely correct someone when they were wrong and the person being corrected would realize their error and make things right. The internet is becoming something that can allow for the rebirth of that value.

Brands, companies, celebrities. Listen. Monitor what people are saying. Care to interact and share your real thoughts. Accept that the conversation is not controlled. Be transparent. Be authentic. Be a part of the world that supports you and you will have lasting success.

One last thing.
