My MySpace Praise

I spend too much time on social networks. Trust me, I rival your 14 year old but it is what we do. The big difference between my use of sites like Facebook and MySpace is that I don’t really enjoy using them. I love the easy, no login needed, see anything you want aspect of YouTube. Beyond that I am not my own target demographic simply because I don’t enjoy the social networking experience as a whole.

You are probably scratching your head right now, saying to yourself, “then what is this guy doing with a social media marketing agency!” My response to that is, “don’t work with what you love, work with what you know.”

I see my lack of interest in social networking as a strong advantage. I may not like the user experience but I love the challenge of marketing. I feed off of the desire to utilize a set of tools to develop value for a client. By not being the type who gets lost exploring the new pictures my friends have uploaded, browsing Wall posts, and looking over profile after profile to see who is leaving comments, I am able to stay focused evaluating the quality of the user experience we are offering on our clients destinations. The question I constantly ask myself is, “is this engaging?”

After far too many hours logged in it was very clear to me that Facebook had a better user experience for the average consumer than MySpace. It was just cleaner, easier, simpler, and more engaging while still generally offering the same brands, bands, and users as MySpace.

Up until recently my assumption was that Facebook would continue to grow beyond MySpace. That was of course until MySpace brought in the juggernaut, a man I believe in - in vision, knowledge, dedication, and excision - MySpace Music’s new head hancho, Courtney Holt.

MySpace Music was the last outpost that Facebook did not have as firm of a grasp on. Now, with Mr. Holt at the controls, I have faith in MySpace’s continued success.

He is the man.
