Maybe there are only 65 million people who use the social web
This isn’t really something I believe, but I wanted to throw it into the ring after reading this article on Mashable: Facebook Now 2/3rds the Size of MySpace in US.
MySpace had a peak in unique users around the 65 million mark.
The numbers have tapered off a bit since those levels a year ago, down to around 58.4 million as this article states.
The question of course is “why?” and here are my thoughts just at possible reasons:
- Only so many people use the internet for social networking in the style that Facebook and MySpace offers
- MySpace has its design and interaction issues from a user standpoint
- Facebook is really only capturing users who also have MySpace accounts and are finally shifting to the “new hangout”
